BSW views itself as distinctive in the Washington DC school landscape with its special school ethos which is structured and disciplined, yet nurturing and supportive. The British School of Washington offers a unique combination of small class sizes, a child centred learning approach, and a challenging international college preparatory curriculum for a culturally diverse population.

Each child at BSW is supported to reach his or her maximum potential regardless of whether his or her previous experience of school has been in a British-style educational environment.

There is a wide range of activities that enhance and enrich the learning environment student leadership opportunities, educational visits, and after school sports, clubs and activities. All children participate in the "House" system which encourages all children, regardless of ability, to participate in a wide range of cross school competitive activities.

A structured in-school framework of communication between Class Teachers/Form tutors, Key Stage Coordinators and Learning Leaders provides all learners with the academic and emotional support they need to ensure academic success and emotional wellbeing throughout the academic year.

In order to ensure that graduates have the widest possible range of options for college and university both at home and worldwide, the graduation requirements are rigorous and students are supported by a College Counsellor who guides them individually through the college decision and admissions process.
